Tell us about you...
Hello! I'm Nashrah Rahman, a junior undergraduate majoring in Public Health and minoring in Business at the University of Maryland. I wanted to join the Experiential Learning Program (ELP) to gain hands-on experience in public health communication and to see how theoretical knowledge is applied in real-world scenarios. My goals for the ELP were to enhance my understanding of public health issues, develop practical skills in health education, and contribute meaningfully to promoting health awareness.
Tell us about what you worked on...
During my time with the ELP, I worked on creating engaging and informative content for social media. My projects included designing Instagram posts and memes aimed at promoting health education. My key tasks involved researching health topics, creating visually appealing graphics, and crafting messages that were both informative and easy to understand. I created a series of posts that addressed various health topics, such as mental health awareness, the importance of vaccination, and healthy lifestyle tips.
Tell us what you learned...
Throughout the program, I picked up valuable skills in digital content creation and social media marketing. I learned how to communicate complex health information in a simple and engaging manner. Additionally, I gained insights into audience engagement strategies and the importance of using visuals to enhance message retention. This experience also deepened my understanding of the public health issues that resonate with different audiences and how to tailor messages to meet their needs.
Tell us what the best part was...
One of the best parts of my participation in the ELP was seeing the positive reactions and increased engagement from our audience on social media. A particular story that stands out was when a follower commented on one of our posts about mental health, sharing that the information provided helped them seek professional help. This feedback was incredibly rewarding and highlighted the real impact of our efforts. I especially loved the collaborative environment of the ELP, where I could learn from my peers and receive constructive feedback from mentors.
Tell us about your future...
Next on my journey is to continue my education by pursuing a graduate degree in Public Health. The skills and knowledge I gained from my participation in the ELP will be invaluable as I advance in my academic and professional career. This experience has reinforced my passion for health communication and public health advocacy. My advice for prospective ELP participants is to be open to learning and to take full advantage of the opportunities to create and innovate. Engaging actively with the program will provide you with experiences that are both professionally and personally rewarding.
