Public health professionals are often called to do the work that they do. They are dedicated to protecting and improving the health of communities. They are often driven by passion and fueled by a desire to make a tangible difference in people's lives. But who are they?
In the U.S., the public health workforce is aligned somewhat closely to the U.S. population in terms of diversity, but a major difference is the representation of women. Women make up the majority of the U.S. public health workforce (79%). From 2005 to 2016, 70-73% of all public health degrees in the U.S. were awarded to women.

In this edition of "Let’s Talk Public Health This Way," we delve into the Welcome to the Futures exhibit at the Smithsonian Arts + Industries Building in Washington, DC. While not explicitly focused on public health, this exhibition serves as a compelling example of how health communication can transcend traditional boundaries.
Last month, I attended the Alliance for Health Policy 2023 Signature Series Summit, where experts and professionals converged to explore the transformative concept of a patient-first health system.
Part of health communication is working with unexpected, non-traditional partners to share health messages in innovative and engaging ways. The “Outbreak: Epidemics in a Connected World” exhibit at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History is just that. This novel exhibit communicates about infectious disease outbreaks to the public using interactive multimedia and gamification.
The 2018 American Public Health Association Annual Meeting is in a few days, and we cannot wait! It’s not just the location (the beautiful San Diego) that’s got us stoked, but it’s also the sessions.
