Introducing the Holistic Interconnected Public Health (HIPH) Framework

Expand how you think about and talk about public health. Holistic interconnected public health.
Let’s Talk Public Health has officially launched the Holistic Interconnected Public Health (HIPH) framework—a conceptual model designed to help public health professionals navigate complex modern health challenges and drive the transition from Public Health 3.0 to 4.0.

Redefining Public Health Systems

Traditional public health often focuses narrowly on human physical and mental/emotional wellness. The HIPH framework expands this scope, demonstrating that individual health and well-being comprise eight dimensions of wellness, are inextricably linked to animal health and planetary ecosystems, and are actively shaped by overlapping layers of influence and overarching determinants of health.

By unifying four established public health models into a single, cohesive framework, HIPH gives professionals a practical tool to assess community needs, build cross-sector partnerships, and drive collective action.

Key Takeaway: Expanding the Health Lens

Modern public health (Public Health 4.0) requires a mindset shift. To build systems that not only protect health across the lifespan but also promote healthy longevity (healthspan), we must expand our focus beyond basic human health to encompass holistic wellness, broader determinants of health, and interconnectedness with animal and environmental health.

The Four Components of the HIPH Framework

  1. One Health: Connects the health of humans, animals, and our shared environment to address global health security and disease prevention through cross-sector collaboration.
  2. Eight Dimensions of Wellness: Breaks down the dimensions (physical, emotional, intellectual, spiritual, social, financial, occupational, and environmental) that drive health and well-being.
  3. Social Ecological Model: Maps six levels of influence on health choices, behaviors, and outcomes—from individual and interpersonal factors to organizational, community, public policy, and global forces.
  4. Determinants of Health: Addresses the overarching factors shaping health outcomes, including social, commercial, political, biological, digital, and historical determinants.

Put Systemic Thinking into Practice

The HIPH framework equips public health professionals and organizations to systematically assess complex population health challenges, identify non-traditional partners, articulate a shared vision for community action, and design policies and manage change.
