LTPH Experiential Learning Program Experience. I joined Let’s Talk Public Health to learn how creative storytelling can make health information accessible and empower people to be healthy and safe through community support and social systems. Sameera Shaik. Experiential Learning Program Intern, Fall 2024.

Tell us about you…

Hi, my name is Sameera! I’m finishing my M.S. Global Health Degree from Arizona State University. Almost there! My interdisciplinary background allowed me to examine people’s health experiences through their social-cultural factors, which inspired me to explore how arts engagement creates healthier communities, advances health communication, and strengthens belonging through partnerships.

Tell us about what you worked on…

I joined Let’s Talk Public Health to learn how creative storytelling can make health information accessible and empower people to be healthy and safe through community support and social systems. Fun fact: I learned about Let’s Talk Public Health through the power of social media, specifically the wonderful public health community on Instagram. They were doing a giveaway, and a fellow public health content creator tagged my name as an entry to the raffle.

Tell us what you learned…

I learned how to create an effective campaign strategy connecting to a specific audience through media representation. After learning about Active Mind and SHOWTIME/MTV Entertainment Studio’s A.S.K. campaign, I realized it has the potential to be culturally tailored for a South Asian American community to emphasize the importance and normalize emotional support. My biggest takeaway was learning to create effective messages so the audience wouldn’t feel overwhelmed when engaging with the content. During one of my check-ins with the CEO, Monique, she provided insights on personal branding, which can help me stand out in the competitive job market and spread my message to bring impactful change and belonging in the health and social impact spaces. Learning that I don’t have to change my reserved personality to connect with others was encouraging.

Tell us what the best part was…

My time with Let’s Talk Public Health was very supportive. I appreciate Monique’s guidance and feedback, which have contributed to my growth as a leader, communicator, and emerging strategist/storyteller.  My experience overall has helped me believe in myself, grow from learning curves, and pay it forward.

Tell us about your future…

Next chapter! I will continue to apply my knowledge and skills to strengthen my foundation in health communication and public relations. Guided by my academic journey, personal growth, and public health experiences, I aim to create work that transforms the health landscape through creativity, culture, and community. As I enter my second year of betting on myself, I will prioritize nurturing myself to blossom with courage. Meaningful progress begins with acknowledging challenges with honesty and accountability, fostering emotional strength and resilience.
