ELP Experience: Abigail Johnson (Spring 2024)

I wanted to join the ELP to broaden my communication and marketing experience and gain insight into the field. My goal for the ELP was to improve my content development, writing skills, and industry knowledge/best practices. Abigail Johnson. Experiential Learning Program, Spring 2024.

Tell us about you...

Hi, my name is Abigail Johnson! I'm currently pursuing my M.S. in Health Communication with a concentration in Healthcare Promotion, Media, and Marketing from Boston University. I wanted to join the ELP to broaden my communication and marketing experience and gain insight into the field. My goal for the ELP was to improve my content development, writing skills, and industry knowledge/best practices.

Tell us about what you worked on...

Throughout my ELP experience, I created content for the LTPH's Instagram and blog. I was able to create weekly social media content and several blog posts for the website. I also assisted with resource development for the library.  This included working on resources related to the Health Communication and Marketing Funnel and audience profiles. My key tasks for my ELP were to develop social media content, develop blog content, and aid in resource development.

Tell us what you learned...

This experience has strengthened my social media, content development, writing, communication, and creative skills. I now have a better understanding of health communication tools, tips, tricks, and how to effectively communicate health or public health-related information.

Tell us what the best part was...

The best part of the ELP was being able to connect with other participants and LTPH staff to hear about what everyone was working on, gain insight, hear stories, and work through ideas if we needed help. I loved being able to connect with the team on projects.

Tell us about your future...

I'm looking forward to finishing up graduate school at the end of this year and starting my search for a full-time role in public health and health communication. I will utilize what I have learned in the ELP in my future job by incorporating what I have learned and the skills I have strengthened into my everyday work. My advice to prospective ELP participants would be to take any opportunity you can to improve the skills needed for your field and take the time to learn from those with industry experience and knowledge.
